WI continues to enjoy working on interesting projects in the Middle East, recently supplying a WIgroundtrack system to open and close a massive LED screen for the Closing Ceremony of the 2017 King Abdulaziz Camel Festival in Rimah, Riyadh province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

WI’s expertise was sought by content production company Filmmaster MEA, and the brief was to make two 30 x 5 metre sections of screen smoothly open and close in sliding door style. The movement was facilitated using six active carts on the WIgroundtrack, controlled by a Vector system.

For the event’s closing ceremony, the screen provided a spectacular 60 metre backdrop to the show directly in front of the Royal VIP seats.

The main challenge was the time and logistics involved, with only two weeks between receiving the request … and air freighting the kit from Belgium to KSA!

WI’s project manager and system designer Geert Stockmans enjoyed working with a highly talented team including their own site and automation supervisors Jacky Hommers and Lesly van Rompaey respectively.

They collaborated closely with Filmmaster’s production manager Julien Poncelet and technical manager Olivier Bierwertz, as well as the video hardware providers, Visual Solutions (Belgium), and their crew of Jo Pauly, Michael Stroobants and David Vandevelde. AES Dubai delivered and built the scaffolding structure, an operation managed by Andy Fulcher, Ross Cameron & Werner Herbst.

The festival featured a variety of entertainment and special activities for visitors and participants including the King Abdulaziz Festival Camel Competition known as ‘Miss Camel’. This important annual heritage festival was founded in 1999 by a group of local Bedouins who decided to host a competition to find the most beautiful camel!
